Today we remember Saint Anna, the mother of the Virgin Mary. Anna was the youngest daughter of the priest Nathan from Bethlehem, from the tribe of Levi. Anna married Saint Joachim who was a native of Galilee.
For a long time Saint Anna and Joachim were childless, but after many years, through their prayers, an angel of the Lord announced to them that they would be the parents of a daughter, who would bring blessings to the whole human race.
Their daughter, who we know as the Holy Virgin Mary was like everyone else in Her mortality, and in being subject to temptation, although She committed no personal sins. She was not a deified, superior being, removed from the rest of humanity. If this were the case, She would not have been truly human, and the nature that Christ took from Her would not have been truly human either. If Christ does not truly share our human nature, then the possibility of our salvation is in doubt.
But He does. Christ Jesus is both God (Divine) and man (human), two natures. On the human side, delivered through Mary, herself a miracle of answered prayer on behalf of godly parents.
Everyone has a legacy, they help make us the people we become. What kind of legacy are you leaving for your children? Your grandchildren and beyond? Anna and Joachim would have had no idea Who their Grandson or Daughter would become, they were just faithful.
Lord Jesus Christ, Son of God. Have mercy on me, a sinner. And help me be faithful, like dear Saints Anna and Joachim.
